Threshold
MFA Year 1+ QSS Group Show 2024
Threshold presents the work of twelve MFA students from Belfast School of Art; most of whom are completing their first year of the two year course, while others, who are studying part-time are at varying stages of their degree.
Created mostly in the same studio setting, with spaces side by side, this group show unites our work collectively in public for the first time and also marks the end point of year one of our MFA and an exciting cusp of work to follow. Threshold encapsulates our individual ventures of progressing our practices while simultaneously culminates in a shared experience of creative growth and development.
The work in this show is rich in a diverse range of methodologies and materials; ranging from more traditional art-making process of painting on canvas, sculpture through ceramics and casting, ink drawing and printmaking to the more unconventional art practices of installation-based work, batik on textiles, drawing with hair, sound pieces and experimental moving image. While our multi-disciplinary processes allow the work to be individually distinct from one another visually, thematically the work overlaps and interconnects because, in contrasting ways, we all seem to be concerned with notions of identity, place, loss and the natural world.
We invite visitors to cross over the threshold and bear witness to this important milestone at the outset of our collective venture.
