In recent years QSS has selected work from the Belfast School of Art Degree Show to exhibit in our gallery space. However, in 2020 things didn’t go quite to plan! While seventeen artists were chosen to exhibit, the show had to be postponed three times owing to COVID restrictions. But, at long last, ‘Emergence IV’ can now go ahead and we are very pleased to welcome visitors in-person from 3rd June.
A panel of four QSS studio holders (Gerard Carson, Gerry Devlin, Rachel Lawell and Sinead McKeever) and an independent curator (Francesca Biondi – Gallery 545) selected the participating artists. This year they are: Julia Bednarczyk, Edward Boyle, Bradley Brimacombe, Jonathan Conlon, Collette Conway, Rebecca Dawson, Audrey Gillespie, June Hill, Claudia McClelland, Josephine McGeown, Zoe Meeks, Fiona Nicholson, Eimear Nic Roibeaird, Rebecca O’Doherty, Kwok L Tsui, Lyssa Watson and Matthew Wilson.
Some of the works on show were made during the artist’s degree course, whilst others have been produced post-graduation. Collectively, they demonstrate the diverse range of media explored at the Belfast School of Art, from photography and painting through to sculpture, installation and printmaking.
By hosting an annual ‘Emergence’ exhibition, QSS provide a valuable and professional platform for recent graduates at a transitional stage in their career. A graduate bursary is also awarded to one emergent artist each year taking the form of free studio provision (exhibiting artist Kwok L Tsui was selected in 20/21).
