Majella Clancy

Majella Clancy was born in 1978 in Co Leitrim. She studied at GMIT, Galway and LIT, Limerick before completing an MFA at The University of Ulster, Belfast in 2006. She has exhibited widely in Ireland and abroad and works as a freelance artist in Ireland and in Luxembourg. She works with painting and photography and has work in many collections including The Office of Public Works, Dublin, The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, University of Ulster Permanent Collection, GMIT, LIT, and The Revenue Commissioners, Limerick. She has recently received a Visual Arts Bursary from Leitrim County Council.

Her work is an exploration of digital imagery combined with painting. She works with inkjet prints, manipulated images which she then reacts to through different painting methods. Depending on how the paint is applied, the original image changes and the boundaries between what is painted or not become blurred. Space is important in the work where abstract mark making and recognisable images interact. She aims to create a dialogue between form and content and the vibrancy and variety of brushstrokes.
Her work engages with the history of painting and the way in which new technology can generate visual information.
