QUEEN STREET STUDIOS - 1984-2005

Queen Street Studios was initiated to facilitate a growing need for artist studio space in the greater Belfast area and is now the largest studio-providing artists organisation in Northern Ireland. Originally existing as the Artists Collective of Northern Ireland, a voluntary committee located QSS current premises - part of the fourth floor of a five storey former industrial red brick building in central Belfast. In 1984, the Artists Collective of Northern Ireland became an official charity under 'Queen Street Studios Ltd'.

The organisation has now more than tripled in size with respect to both its premises and membership during the 21 years of its existence - now occupying the entire top floor of the building and part of the third floor. QSS currently provides 22 studio spaces for painters, sculptors, live art, installation and mixed media artists who are at various stages of their career development.

In addition to providing subsidised space and a supportive environment for its members, artists are actively supported and have achieved national and international acclaim while retaining positive professional and social contact with the organisation. QSS has strong overseas links and is actively involved in international exchange schemes.

In 2000 Queen Street Studios opened a dedicated Gallery that has now developed into a vibrant contemporary exhibition space. The gallery programmes six exhibitions annually and exhibits work from artists locally, nationally and internationally.

Queen Street Digital Studio's was launced in June 2002. It is a Multi-media and Digital Arts Centre engaged in training, education, and methods of new media production. The Digital Project Space offers a four-month Residency program with technical assistance, twenty-four hour access, equipment, opportunities and facilities. We also programme a comprehensive range of new-media workshops.

While most members of QSS are from Ireland, North and South, there is a growing international contingent (members from Great Britain, Australia, North America, mainland Europe, and South Africa). All members of QSS are required to be a Fine Art graduate as well as retaining an active exhibition history.
